Organised by : The European Policy Centre (EPC), on behalf of EEGM (European Economic Governance Monitor), an international network of five leading European think-tanks: Chatham House (London), the EPC, Ifri (Paris), ISPI (Milan) and the SWP (Berlin). |
 | The European economy is going through a period of turbulence. Its financial institutions are reeling from the shock of the sub-prime crisis, with calls from the ECB to curb spending and to exercise wage restraint. Consumers are struggling to keep up with the impact of inflation, with hefty rises in the price of staples, such as food and energy. The EU desperately needs to find new paths to maintain growth and, at the same time, stay competitive in a globalised economy. The role of the European institutions and economic governance are crucial in this and this Policy Dialogue will examine how Europe’s economic governance needs to be adapted to deal with these new challenges.Experts from the five think tanks will analyse the main challenges facing European economic governance in the context of globalisation and will assess whether the reforms foreseen in the Lisbon Treaty really will equip the EU with the right tools and competencies to better govern the economy. They will deliver a number of key messages and recommendations for policy-makers. Following a keynote speech by Hans Gert-Pöttering, President of the European Parliament, on the way forward, a high-level panel, moderated by Quentin Peel of the Financial Times, will debate the key messages presented by the analysts. Speakers on the panel will include David Wright (Deputy Director General DG MARKT), Klaus Regling, Director General of DG ECFIN in the European Commission, Emma Bonino, former Italian Minister for European Affairs, and Alain Lamassoure, former French Minster for European Affairs. The conference will conclude with a key note speech (speaker to be confirmed). Programme_Conference_EEGM.doc |
