Thomas Gomart's academic and professional background has been closely related to post-Soviet space, as Lavoisier Fellow at the Moscow State Institute for International Relations (2001), Visiting Fellow at the EU Institute for Security Studies (2003) and Marie Curie Fellow at Department of War Studies at King’s College (2003-2004). He holds a PHD in History (Paris I - Panthéon La Sorbonne) and an EMBA from HEC Paris.

He funded and was Director of the Russia/NIS Centre of Ifri from 2004 to 2013, has been Vice-President for Strategic Development of Ifri from September 2010 to March 2015, and was appointed Director of Ifri in April 2015.
