The crisis in Ukraine seems at first to be the result of the impact of two misunderstandings of Russian and Western approaches.

Yet it is also the product of interrupted communication between Moscow and the West, and specifically the EU, notably since 2008 and the Georgian crisis. Reopening dialogue between these two actors will only be fruitful if each side takes the other’s unique historical and cultural specificities into consideration.
