As Germany faces recession and high inflation, the risk of Germany's industrial base losing competitiveness is also on the rise. Added to this are protest movements, notably by farmers and train drivers. The government's unpopularity and loss of confidence in its ability to meet the many challenges it faces are driving up the far right, especially in the new Länders, where three regional elections will be held this coming fall.

The treaty signed by France and Germany in Aachen on January 22, 2019 highlights the role of civil society in bilateral cooperation and aims to contribute to "bringing societies [and citizens in both countries] closer together".
