The U.S. defense budget has faced a sharp reduction since 2010, linked to the drawing down of two wars and the Great Recession. 

Moreover, the polarization of the political debate in Washington and the process of sequestration now underway blur all possibilities of analysis and complicate the application of the January 2012 Strategic Directive. Overall, present conditions hinder the definition by the Pentagon of the future of American military leadership.
