In response to the Ukrainian conflict, Ankara, which had previously developed a special relationship with both sides based on history and economic interests, adopted a balancing strategy of active neutrality. 

An opportunistic power in the fullest sense of the word, Türkiye has seized every opportunity to defend its own interests, to offer to mediate, and to affirm, in response to both adversaries and allies—in particular within NATO—its heft as a regional power.
