The 2008 crisis prompted a new series of initiatives for reinforcing the economic integration of East Asia. China, South Korea and Japan seemed to have taken the lead in this regard, even discussing the possibility for a trilateral FTA. While cooperation between the three Northeast Asian powers is gaining strength, the ASEAN nations see the danger of being marginalized in the proposed regional construction. On the other hand, as leadership competition is still looming large in Japan-China relations, the role of ASEAN as honest broker seems indispensable for the formation of an East Asian community.
