Beijing tightens control of foreign NGOs

The Chinese government recently passed a law to bring foreign NGOs under stricter control.

The legislation, which will come into force in 2017, gives police wide-ranging powers to monitor the activities of thousands of foreign NGOs which are regarded as a threat to national security in China. Under the new law they will no longer be able to operate independently.
