Controlling Trafficking or Losing the North : Notes on Trafficking in Mauritania Notes de l'Ifri, 2010, "The Maghreb in its regional and international environment" Program
Our interest in this topic stems both from our annual visits to Mauritania which started fifteen years ago, and the tiny amount of research noticed on trafficking in this country.
Indeed, trafficking is an important phenomenon in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, on macroeconomic as well as macro-social levels. Trafficking serves at the same time as a mode of insertion in the global economy, a type of rental economy, and a way of accumulation which could put power at stake.
