The Sustainability of Space Operations: An Opportunity for European Leadership?
As space becomes a key arena for power projection strategies, while facing growth and diversification of orbital activities, the concept of “space sustainability” is emerging as a new framework of analysis for space governance.
Derived from the lexicon of environmental issues, the discourse on space sustainability indeed offers states a flexible concept, proving valuable in a shifting geopolitical landscape where traditional space diplomacy struggles to meet modern political goals.
Europe, whose space model is questioned since the New Space disruption, could benefit from embracing this new paradigm. Following the lead of key partners, Europe stands to benefit from mobilizing its technical expertise and long-standing experience in space operations to develop a coherent political doctrine based on sustainability. This would clarify its international stance, strengthen its position in the global space market, and restore its central role in the international debate on space governance.
