The international order established in the aftermath of the Second World War is undergoing a profound transformation.
The war in Ukraine is reshaping Europe’s security environment; the rise of artificial intelligence is transforming technological power dynamics between states and democratic governance; persistent instability in the Middle East is further weakening an already strained regional order; and, finally, uncertainties surrounding the transatlantic relationship and the future of UN multilateralism are raising questions about the resilience of longstanding alliances.
As recent and forthcoming national elections add further uncertainty over the continuity of diplomatic policies in Europe, states must adapt their diplomatic tools to preserve their capacity for anticipation, influence, and collective action.
It is in this context that Ifri is pleased to welcome Martin Briens, Secretary General of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, on Monday, 21 September.
