Germany passes military service bill
In the wake of the war in Ukraine, Germany and France are working to define security guarantees for Kyiv.

At the Franco-German Ministerial Council, discussions also focused on how both countries – as well as the European Union – can substantially strengthen their military capabilities. Jeanette Süss, Research Fellow at the Study Committee on Franco-German Relations, Ifri, highlighted the challenges facing the Bundeswehr, which in the coming years will need to significantly increase its number of soldiers. She also pointed out how divisive this and related issues remain within Germany’s current governing coalition.
